Heritage tourism is travel designed to experience the places and activities that authentically represent the stories and people of the past. Each year, thousands of tourists from around the world visit Philadelphia's numerous historic sites and attractions to step back in time to the life of a different age. The four historic house museums of The Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks have become integral components of the heritage tourism experience in historic Philadelphia, offering over 15,000 visitors a year distinctive opportunities to discover the social history and cultural heritage of this historic city.
Landmarks also plays a crucial role in the tourism economy of Southeastern Pennsylvania throughout its sponsorship of the Road Scholar Program.
Landmarks is part of the national Road Scholar network. Road Scholar is the name for the programs developed and offered by Elderhostel, Inc., the not-for-profit world leader in lifelong learning since 1975. Their mission is to empower adults to explore the world's places, peoples, cultures, and ideas, and in so doing to discover more about themselves. A fellowship of learning and the joy of discovery are the hallmarks of the Road Scholar experience. Landmarks offers approximately 50 program dates per year introducing participants (about 2,000 per year) to the vast historical and cultural resources of our area. The duration of the programs are 6 days-5 nights, 4 days-3 nights, and 3 days-2 nights.
Road Scholar programs are thematically designed to educate participants about the vast cultural resources in the region. The general topics of history, art, and music lead participants to field excursions in Philadelphia, Bucks, Montgomery and Chester counties, as well as Delaware and New Jersey. Landmarks Road Scholar also partners with Gettysburg, Boston and New York City to provide joint programs in both major cities. Landmarks is also one of the largest subscribers to the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Philadelphia Flower Show, the Barnes Foundation, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art just to name a few.
