Information for Artists

Introduction
Landmarks Contemporary Projects is a curated museum program. Our exhibitions, performances and other public programs are developed internally through curatorial research, and are by invitation only. Much of our exhibition schedule for the next two years has already been selected. Be aware that we do not currently have an active call for submissions for a specific project. That said, we try to remain as approachable as possible, and are always on the look-out for new creative work. While we do not have the resources and staff to meet with every interested artist personally, we do review inquiries on a rolling basis, and maintain an active curatorial file for future reference.

What we look for
Please explore the rest of the Contemporary Projects section of our website and familiarize yourself with current, previous and upcoming projects.

We do not limit our projects by media or genre, but because of the nature of our spaces, most visual arts projects fall under the very broad category of "installation art." We strive to find projects that are experimental in nature, projects that cross disciplinary boundaries and challenge preconceptions. We look for a strong critical or conceptual foundation. Some projects are object-based, and others are performative, service-based or interactive. Most work is site-specific and is often newly-created for our spaces through a residency/research process that evolves over months.

Our spaces are not "white-box galleries." There is a preponderance of pre-existing context and content in our spaces. Not all artists will be comfortable working in this type of environment. Those that are will have an opportunity to engage in a profound artistic conversation with the sites. While our spaces are ostensibly some of the most "traditional" in the United States, the Contemporary Projects we choose are those that break with traditional artistic production. We seek out the newest forms of artistic practice and inquiry.

What we are not

  • We are not a commercial gallery, and sales are not the primary purpose of exhibitions.
  • We are not a for-rent exhibition or performance space.
  • We do not collect contemporary art. Please do not submit sales inquiries.
  • We are not a co-op or member gallery space.

Physical Limitations
Our sites cannot be altered by nails, paint, or exhibition construction. This is a challenge, but one that encourages creative approaches.  Given the nature of our sites, we are very limited in our ability to exhibit two-dimensional artwork. We will very rarely, if ever, exhibit traditional framed artwork or painting on canvas at our sites.

Experimental Musicians
The  bowerbird@LANDMARKS program is a curatorial partnership dedicated to experimental performance. If you are primarily an experimental musician, please contact bowerbird directly for curatorial review.

Financial Resources
Landmarks Contemporary Projects has very limited financial resources. Fundraising is currently on a per-project basis. We make no claim, and you should not assume, that any funds are available for production, shipping, travel or honoraria.

Submission Format
There is no standard form for an inquiry, but please follow these general guidelines as appropriate to your work. Keep it simple. We don't want you to go to any expense or put an inordinate amount of work into your inquiry.
Please, no phone or email inquiries.
Inquiries should be mailed to:

Artist Inquiries

321 S. 4th Street
Philadelphia, PA 19106

  • You must include a stamped/self-addressed envelope so that we may inform you that your inquiry has been received. Unless you have not received a confirmation letter within 90 days, please do not call regarding the status of your materials.
  • Please include a CV or resume
  • Please include a cover letter or an artist statement
  • For images: Please include a CD or a URL for web-content. High-quality print-outs are also acceptable. We do not accept slides. For installations, please include multiple views. There is no specific number or images we ask for.
  • For video/film/performance: Please include a DVD (no VHS) or a link to web content.
  • For literary work: please send whatever printed material you feel is appropriate (photocopies are fine; materials will not be returned)
  • Do NOT send original artwork, irreplaceable catalogs or anything that you need returned to you. Any materials submitted will not be returned.
  • Press clippings are not necessary, unless you believe they're particularly elucidating. We're just as likely to exhibit someone with no previous press coverage, as a Whitney Biennial artist with an ArtForum article (both of which we've done).

Your materials will be reviewed and maintained in our curatorial files, but we do not by statement or implication make any assurances that you will be selected for a project. If we require further information, or would like to set up a meeting, you will be contacted.
