Saved! Preserving Old Philadelphia:

85 Years of The Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks

In her 1941 annual report to the members of PhilaLandmarks, our founder Frances Anne Wister, asked a simple question:

"What will it take to educate the public to preserve landmarks?"

With all the current large-scale development projects (and demolition) going on in Philadelphia, we thought this was a good time to delve into that question once again.

This exhibit is featured in PHM's Community History Gallery sponsored by PECO

(thru Friday, June 30th)

See how Frances Anne Wister led the way in Philadelphia's 20th century preservation movement, how a newly formed organization (PhilaLandmarks) was able to purchase and renovate the Powel House during the height of the Depression, and the impact of this early work on future urban renewal projects. The exhibit also addresses the work of modern day preservationists and current issues of concern.

This will be an ongoing exhibit through June 2017 as part of the regular admission to the Philadelphia History Museum at Atwater Kent

Don't forget... all PhilaLandmarks members receive FREE admission to the Philadelphia History Museum (reciprocal membership). Renew your PhilaLandmarks membership today and see this exhibit for free!
